West Texas panhandle

We missed the right day for Shamrock, Texas by one. Apparently they have a huge St. Patrick's Day celebration, which fell on a Saturday this year. We were there on the 16th, so there wasn't much action.

The U Drop Inn in Shamrock was the inspiration for Ramone's Body Art Shop in the movie "Cars". Turns out a lot of the film was inspired by real places along the Mother Road. I'll point some more out, I'm sure, but in the meantime here's a great guide.

Groom, Texas is the site of the famous leaning water tower. Wikipedia has this description of it: "It originally was a functioning water tower which was slated for demolition until Ralph Britten bought it and moved it to serve as a sign for his truck stop and tourist information center. This truck stop can still be seen, set back off the road behind the tower, now boarded up and in disrepair following a devastating fire decades ago."

Groom's biggest attraction today is undoubtedly the Groom Cross, but that gets its own post.
